William Edgar Simmons, Jr.

William “Bill” Edgar Simmons Jr. went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 30, 2021 at the age of 61 after a long struggle with Parkinson’s disease. Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Sue Winfield Simmons. He cared for her until her death on Mar 12, 2015. He leaves behind his father, William Edgar Simmons Sr. and dearest family friends, Gene and Margie Sisson. As a child, Bill enjoyed going fishing with his father, and eating his mothers cooking. His grandmother also introduced him to all the fine dining and theater Birmingham had to offer. Bill was a brilliant man and acquired four college degrees including three Bachelors degrees and a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from UAB. In his adult years, Bill enjoyed the quick and ever changing world of technology from computers and printers to video game systems. In his final years of life, Bill struggled physically to get around and do for himself but he never let that stop him from trying to find joy in life and the simple things each day. Bill’s family would like to thank Dr. Richard Diethelm, Dr. Taylor Bragg, and the staff at St. Vincent’s East for the wonderful, close care they provided. They would also like to thank his caregivers- Devon and Beth Payne, Pamela Scott, Marsha Walton, Andrea Threadford, and the Visiting Angels team lead by Tosha Pritt and Russell Renfroe. The family will receive family and friends on Wednesday August 4, 2021 at Walker Chapel Funeral Home at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Mark Gainey of Fultondale First Baptist will officiate a graveside service at Walker Chapel Memorial Gardens at 2:00 p.m.
