Louie Douglas “Doug” Hollis

Louie Douglas Hollis was born February 25, 1939 in a shotgun house in Leeds, Alabama. He was the oldest of six children born to Grady Festus and Kathleen Corbett Hollis, 5 of which made it to adulthood. He was born prematurely weighing only around 3 lbs. So small the top drawer of their dresser was used as a crib and he was fed with an eye dropper. He attended Irondale Elementary and Shades Valley High school, graduating from Minor High School in 1959. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1963. He married Jerrell Camp, his neighbor and friend, in August of 1964. They and his son Scotty welcomed a baby sister in July of 1965, a brother in March of 1968, and another sister in December 1971. Doug, who was affectionately known by many names such as Poppy, Redman, Grumpy, Pop and Daddy, was healed and made whole as he entered Paradise on April 8, 2025 at age 86. Doug was preceded in death by one son, Scott Douglas Hollis; grandson, Jay Greene Hollis; his parents and three siblings.   He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 60 years, Jerrell Hollis; three children, Aletha Hollis Taylor (Mike), Shannon Hollis (Jodi) and Lucy Hollis McGill (James); daughter-in-law, Mary Hollis; bonus daughter, Leslie Cook (Jonathan);  seventeen grandchildren, Lane Hollis-Waller (Dani), Mollie Bailey (Chance), Tyler Dedman, Casey Taylor, Matthew Taylor (Halee), Hannah Taylor, Tyler Williamson (Sherise), Noah Hopper, Ashlei Davidson, Allison Davidson-Castillo (Hugo), Jonathan McGill, Christina Paddock (Corbin), Ada Siddqui McGill, Alex Swindle, Seth Cook, and Leah Chahrour (Ali-Jah); fourteen great-grandchildren, Christian, Alba, Myla, Melanie, Jaiden, Jocelyn, Elias, Zakkary, Jackson, Asher, Micah, Maverick, Harvey, and Everleigh; two sisters, Faye Estes and Rita Pauls; and many nieces, nephews, other extended family and a host of friends.  He was a Dredge Operator and an Auto Mechanic by trade, but he could fix just about anything. He loved to build and fly model airplanes and was a very skilled bowler, having bowled many perfect scored games. In 1982, he obeyed the Gospel and was baptized into Christ. He attended faithfully at Fultondale Church of Christ until 1992 and then he and Jerrell placed membership at the Pinson congregation to worship with extended family. He attended there until recently, when his health allowed. Doug was one of the biggest Alabama Football fans you’ll ever meet and some of his favorite past times was watching football games with family. He was quite superstitious and insisted eating hotdogs or bad luck would fall upon the team and they would lose the game. He also loved to fish and camp. In his last days he talked about going to Logan Martin lake in Pell City to go fishing.  The family will receive friends on Friday, April 11, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Walker Chapel Funeral Home.  A celebration of Doug’s life will follow at 11:00 a.m.  The family wishes to extend their appreciation for the loving care provided to Doug in his last days by family and friends as well as Chrystal, Rebecca, Tish and especially Dr. Doug Alford with ACG Hospice.
