Dorothy Gann Blakeney

Dorothy Mae (Gann) Blakeney of Fultondale, Alabama was promoted to Heaven on Friday, October 5th, 2018 at the age of 86. Dorothy died of kidney failure as did several other family members. Her daughter wrote, I think about her laying in bed gasping for air, then I think of where she is now. I think of the glories she sees and the beauty she is in the middle of, with her Savior. She is with her family and friends and the wonderful part is that we will get to be together again.

Mrs. Blakeney is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Ralph Blakeney Sr., one son; Ralph Blakeney Jr., one great-grandson; Johnny Cole Blakeney, parents; Ludy Gann and Mae (Stanford) Gann, as well as one sister; Gladys Walker, and two brothers; Garl Gann and Arnold Gann.

Dorothy is survived by one son; Rocky Blakeney and wife, Rojeana and one daughter; Cindy Sheppeard, two sisters; Ruby Cook and Martha Tyler, two brothers; Leon Gann and Bob Gann, four grand-daughters; Paige, Kimberly, Karen, and Stacey, one special adopted grand-daughter; Holly Scroggins, and four great grand-children; Josh, Summer, Will and Gage.

Dorothy was born in Beaverton, Alabama but moved to Birmingham for her husband to find work. She was a longtime member of East Thomas Baptist Church and enjoyed working in the nursery for many years. After East Thomas closed, she went to Cornerstone Church of Mt. Olive, where she attended until her death. Dorothy loved her Lord and it showed in her sweet demeanor. 

For many years Dorothy worked in genealogy. She visited people, libraries, cemeteries, and attended teaching seminars. Dorothy collected, borrowed, and copied thousands of photos and information. She and her sister in law, Eileen Gann were able to go back seventeen generations together.

Mrs. Blakeney suffered with arthritis for most of her life and has lived with her daughter and grand-daughter since her husband died in February of 2011.

We can shed tears because she is gone, or we can smile because she lived.
