Donald Ray Abney Jr., 70, of Kimberly, Alabama, stepped into Heaven on December 27, 2023. He was born on August 3, 1953, in Fultondale. Donald, known to his loved ones as a devoted husband, Dad, Pawpaw, and great-Pawpaw, will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Donald is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 53 years, Barbara Abney, and his two sons, Clint Abney and Steve (Patti) Abney. He will also be greatly remembered by his grandchildren, Brandon Abney, Andrew (Sara) Abney, Jacob Abney, Amber Abney, and Jessica Abney, as well as his great-grandchildren, Margot and Rosalie Abney. Donald is also survived by his siblings, Charlotte Brown, Ronald Abney, and Charles Abney and a host of family and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Ray Abney Sr., and his mother Peggy Clay Abney.
Donald proudly served in the U.S. Army and trained as a diesel mechanic. He served six years and was sent to Korea during the Vietnam War era. After his military service, he still worked as a mechanic but eventually pursued a career as a carpenter, running his own business for many years. He transitioned to a different path in the remaining years of his career. He became the head custodian at Mortimer Jordan High School, where he formed lasting bonds with students and faculty. However, his most cherished and fulfilling role was as the Senior Adult Pastor at North Highland Baptist Church for nearly twenty years.
Donald enjoyed crappie fishing and had a talent for telling jokes that would bring laughter to any room. Some of which should have been kept from being told since he had to look left or right before he said them.
A celebration service to honor Donald's life will be held at North Highland Baptist Church of Warrior, Alabama on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at North Highland Baptist Church. The caring staff at Walkers Chapel Funeral Home in Fultondale, Alabama, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
If you would like to honor him, the family kindly requests donations to the Building Program of North Highland Baptist Church as a choice instead of flowers in memory of Brother Donald Abney. All contributions can be mailed to: P. O. Box 250 Warrior, AL 35180.
Please join us in remembering and celebrating the life of Brother Donald. He will forever be remembered as a loving husband, Dad, Pawpaw, and great-Pawpaw and a dedicated member of his church and community. He will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. As we celebrate his life, we have this glorious hope: "Here lies the shell, the nut has gone to Heaven."
